How many of us have a good vision statement for our business?
If you don't have one, it is probably time to think about it. Formalizing your guiding principles is potentially more important than you realize. Going through the visioning process is a good way to clarify the principles you follow and it builds trust.
Without a vision, others do not know what to expect from us. As individuals we may not know what to expect either. Frustration and conflict are soon to follow.
Here are the steps to establishing a vision statement.
- Vision- we expect to arrive at this destination
- Mission- the path we follow to get to the destination
- Values- how the path is shaped
- Goals- movements down the path
- Strategies- steps we take which provide movement
- Action- taking the steps
As an example here is the vision statement for my business.
Helping others implement sound business practices is my vision. My mission is to develop my current relationships to identify solid business people who are willing to work along side business owners. I want to work with people who are looking for a consistent approach to management. The goal is to find people that have the same values and desire to grow that I do. I value relationships and understand that only after developing trust can I truly make the impact I desire.
Your vision will be different than mine but pursue a vision. Your organization will benefit from the process.
